"Wind
Weekend" Draws a Crowd!
The wind holds tremendous power…and can bring
incredible enjoyment, as well.
Wind Weekend, planned for May 10 – 11 at Taylor Park
in Freeport, Illinois, proved this point. On
Saturday, nearly 300 people enjoyed “Take to the
Air!,” an incredible kite-flying event that brought
together first-time fliers and experienced kite
handlers. More than 100 children built their own
kites, while scores of others flew the free
EcoEnergy kites they decorated at school. (EcoEnergy
donated nearly 1,000 kites to thrilled educators at
elementary schools in Freeport and Lena, Illinois,
as art projects and to help teachers explain wind
power.) The event was co-sponsored by EcoEnergy, the
Freeport Park District, and Highland Community
College.
Participants not only enjoyed the spring weather,
they were mesmerized as the colorful kites danced to
the wind’s soothing rhythm. The crowd also was
enthusiastic about the 250-foot kite candy drops
(how often do treats fall from the sky?!)
EcoEnergy representative Dave Vrtol was on hand to
answer questions about wind energy, as well as help
his 10-year old daughter fly a kite. Although the
second day of the Wind Weekend was rained out, Dave
was pleased with the overall event and Saturday’s
success. “We’re just happy to work with the Park
District and Highland Community College to offer
this kind of event for the community,” said Dave.
“It’s really gratifying to see so many people
outside enjoying this time together…appreciating
nature and learning more about the wind.”
