Power Systems Studies
EcoEnergy has a solid reputation for detailed and
accurate electrical system studies for all types of
facilities, whether they are generating electricity or
consuming it – or both. From commercial, industrial and
healthcare facilities that utilize large amounts of
power to biomethane or wind facilities generating power
for entire communities to educational campuses and other
complexes generating their own power to be partially or
completely “off the grid,” we can handle the job with
our experience in all types of power generation,
including traditional fossil fuels and cogeneration as
well as renewable sources.
Our power system studies include complete and accurate
diagramming of facility electrical systems, addition of
new equipment, and ensuring that electrical systems can
accept new loads. Central to our study is an evaluation
that also ensures that protective devices will behave
correctly under fault or motor-starting conditions.
We apply industry-standard methods and employ the best
computer software tools to perform the following system
studies, written in plain English in paper or electronic
formats.
- One-Line Diagram: A one-line diagram is a complete
“road map” of a facility’s electrical system and is
an essential for completion of the studies below. We
can verify an existing diagram, update current
diagrams, or provide new ones.
-
Fault and Coordination Studies: Only a Fault and
Coordination Study can determine, in advance of an
outage, that a facility is properly coordinated. In
a properly coordinated system, a fault will result
in minimal outages. Proper coordination of
protective devices is a requirement of Article 110
of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Equipment Evaluation Studies: We can examine
expected fault currents in a power system to
determine if new or existing equipment is properly
rated for the fault conditions that could exist.
Equipment that is not properly rated is a safety
hazard. Article 110 of the NEC requires that all
equipment be properly rated for the fault conditions
it could experience within a system.
-
Arc Flash Studies: We can help properly label
electrical equipment so that electrical safety
programs comply with the latest IEEE, NPFA, and OSHA
guidance and regulations. Proper arc flash labels
help maintenance and other personnel working on a
site to determine the proper personal protective
equipment (ppe) needed for the energy to which they
could be exposed, including safe approach distances.
Arc flash labeling is now a requirement of the NEC.
- Transient Motor Starting Analysis: Our simulation
software can solve motor-starting problems and
predict whether the starting currents of a new motor
might introduce new problems into a system.
Dynamic Power Systems Modeling
Today’s Earth-friendly energy solutions demand both
experience and innovation from power system engineers.
EcoEnergy engineers, with over 1400MW of traditional and
alternative energy project experience and almost 3000MW
of alternative energy projects in progress, are the best
choice to move either type of energy project forward.
EcoEnergy engineers draw on all of this to create a
dynamic power system model for study and testing. For
wind facilities, for example, our sophisticated modeling
software allows us to design highly effective and
efficient collection systems so that the maximum amount
of electricity can be carried safely and most
effectively to the grid from the generators. In order to
ensure minimal power loss in the overall process, we can
experiment with input variables such as the cable itself
(its size and type), how much power has to travel
through it, the distance it has to travel, and the Rho
factor throughout the facility (which involves the
thermal conductivity of soil).
