Intelligent Power Switching
The intelligent automatic switchgear designed by EcoEnergy can dramatically
improve electrical power reliability. Modern electrical switchgear can apply
technologies such as microprocessors, internet communications and GPS timing to
yield dramatically enhanced capabilities. These new technologies allow
switchgear to automatically make decisions that will keep the most lights on or
save energy costs as well as protect critical facility systems – and employees!
– in the event of an electrical system fault.
We call this concept Intelligent Power Switching (IPS). IPS can locate and
isolate an electrical fault to reconfigure the electrical power distribution
system, thereby limiting the extent of an outage. This can provide automated
redundancy for maximum protection against outages, which is extremely important
in 24/7 facilities such as hospitals or large manufacturing plants. The system
can respond to out-of-tolerance alarms and automatically switch between
substations in the event of a problem.
In addition, as the sale of electrical power is de-regulated, IPS also can
provide the ability to select between two or more utility power sources based on
cost. Each feeder in a multiple feeder system can be connected to a different
energy supplier so that it can be programmed to check the spot market for
electricity and determine the most cost-effective supplier for any given time
period for even a few hours at a time. For facilities that can modify their
processes to reflect lower power usage timeframes, this can result in
considerable cost savings.
